My office is a mess…yes, I’ll admit it. It has gotten out of control. Like many people, my office seems to be the conduit to everything. Papers, files, sell sheets, receipts, flash drives, pens, and more. Everything gets dropped here. It impacts productivity and my sanity!
So yes, it has gotten beyond me.
Won’t Be Fixed in a Day
This didn’t happen over night so there is no quick fix. Plan on how you want to handle future drop offs and how you want to attack the present situation.
Touch and Decide
Pick up everything once and decide. There is no sense in making piles and thinking about things. This is an office and it needs to quick and analytical. There is no emotion on a work order from 6 months ago.
People need to be taught your expectations. Everything does not need to end up with you. You may have to empower some people, you may need to have a frank discussion on what is important…you will need to straighten some things out.
I’m a fan of spy movies and you always see the spies in safe houses burning documents when the bad guys get too close. Have a box to put paper in that you no longer want. I recommend using a shredder to destroy them. Safe, quick and secure…it is also quite satisfying.
Office Space Baseline
Once the past is removed, organize the space how you feel it best works. Have a place for everything and let people know that it is not a drop off zone. Educate others and yourself. Also don’t be afraid to adjust if you feel something is not working. Don’t get locked into something that doesn’t work for YOU! You need to protect your ability to function well and maintain some level of sanity, an organized office is a step in the right direction.
